Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection that causes loss of the bone that supports the teeth and their soft tissue attachment to the gums. This disease may have no symptoms and patients often do not know they have it until a dentist does an oral exam and x-rays. In more advanced stages patients may experience:
- Red, swollen, tender gums
- Gums that bleed easily, particularly after brushing or flossing
- Receding gums
- Chronic bad breath or bad taste in the mouth
- Loose or shifting teeth
Periodontal (“Gum”) disease is an infection of the gums and bone that surround and support your teeth. There are a variety of treatments for gum disease depending on the stage of disease, and your overall health.
